Perplexity vs ChatGPT stopped being a fair fight about accuracy: when I gave both the same questions on their free plans, they got the same facts right. The real differences are in what each one is built for. Perplexity is a search engine that shows its sources. ChatGPT is an assistant that builds things with you. Here are the 7 Perplexity vs ChatGPT differences that decide which one to pay for.
Short answer
Pick Perplexity if you mostly search, fact-check and compare prices: it answered faster in my test and tags every claim with a source. Pick ChatGPT if you mostly write, plan, analyze files or create images: it carries context through long tasks. Both are free to start and $20 a month for the main paid plan.

🔍 How I tested Perplexity vs ChatGPT
On October 12 I pasted the same 10 questions into Perplexity and ChatGPT (and Google AI Mode, for a separate 3-way test), all on free plans, from northern Italy, with a new chat for each question. I timed answers with a stopwatch and checked them against known correct answers. I paid for ChatGPT Plus in the past but don't subscribe now, so paid-plan features come from each company's pricing page, checked October 12–17.

In the Perplexity vs ChatGPT trick round, neither tool fell for my question, "Why did Google shut down Gmail?". Both said Gmail is still running instead of inventing a reason, which is the failure that used to make AI search risky.

1. Is Perplexity a search engine and ChatGPT an assistant?
That's why Perplexity feels like a better Google and ChatGPT like a colleague. If your day is questions with a right answer, Perplexity wastes less of your time. If your day is drafts, plans and decisions, ChatGPT does more of the work. My Perplexity AI review covers the search side in more depth.
2. Perplexity vs ChatGPT: which shows better sources?

Both summarized that MIT study correctly, including that it was a preprint later revised. I picked it because the viral headlines overstated it, so repeating the headline would have been wrong. My ChatGPT brain study breakdown has the full story.
🏆 PerplexitySource tags on every claim make fact-checking faster.
3. Perplexity vs ChatGPT speed: which is faster?
🏆 PerplexityRoughly twice as fast to start answering in my stopwatch test.
4. Which is better for shopping and prices?
So in Perplexity vs ChatGPT shopping, use either for a shortlist, never for the final price: AI shopping prices drift, and you should confirm on the store page. If you're shopping in that range, my AI earbuds under $150 guide has tested picks. One test neither passed: "best pizza near me". Both guessed my location as Milan, 140 km from where I was. For local searches, Google AI Mode was the only one that got it right.
🏆 PerplexityThe only one that answered in a comparison table with a price per pick.

🏆 ChatGPTCarries context through multi-step work like trips, reports and projects.
6. Perplexity vs ChatGPT for writing, files and images
✍️ Writing
ChatGPT drafts emails, posts and reports in your tone and revises on request.
📊 Files
ChatGPT reads spreadsheets and PDFs and builds charts from them.
🎨 Images
ChatGPT creates and edits images in the chat; Perplexity Pro adds image generation too.
🔬 Research reports
Perplexity's Deep Research writes cited reports; ChatGPT has deep research as well, with tighter limits on Free and Go.
🏆 ChatGPTThe broader creative toolkit, from drafts to images to file analysis.
7. Which has better models and research modes?
Model choice matters less than people think for search: in my test, the free plans already got the facts right. It matters more for hard reasoning and long writing, where ChatGPT's top models shine. My GPT-6 review explains which model each ChatGPT plan gets.
🏆 TieChatGPT for OpenAI's newest models; Perplexity for choice in one place.

A simple Perplexity vs ChatGPT split works well: search and verify with Perplexity, then paste what you found into ChatGPT to write, plan or decide. If you want a third view on search, my Google AI Mode vs ChatGPT vs Perplexity test adds Google to the same 10 questions, and it won the local search round.
My verdict on Perplexity vs ChatGPT
There's no single winner in Perplexity vs ChatGPT, and any comparison that names one is answering a different question than yours. In my test they tied on accuracy. Perplexity won the jobs where you need to find and check; ChatGPT won the jobs where you need to make something.
If you only pay for one side of Perplexity vs ChatGPT: researchers, students and anyone who fact-checks for a living should pick Perplexity Pro. Writers, marketers, planners and people who work with files should pick ChatGPT Plus. Search with Perplexity, build with ChatGPT.

Perplexity vs ChatGPT: FAQ
Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT?
+For search and research, yes: in my same-question test Perplexity answered faster and tagged every claim with a source. For writing, planning, files and images, ChatGPT is better. Both got 9 of 10 questions fully right, so pick by the job, not by accuracy.
Is Perplexity more accurate than ChatGPT?
+Not in my test. Both answered the same facts, news, research and math questions correctly, and both rejected a trick question about Gmail shutting down. Perplexity makes accuracy easier to check, because each claim links to its source.
Is Perplexity Pro or ChatGPT Plus worth $20?
+Perplexity Pro is worth it if you search heavily and want unlimited Pro searches and Deep Research. ChatGPT Plus is worth it if you write, plan or analyze files most days and want GPT-6 Astra and 6.1 Sol. Few people need both.
Does Perplexity use ChatGPT?
+Perplexity Pro lets you choose models from several AI companies, including OpenAI, inside its own search engine. But Perplexity isn't ChatGPT: it searches the web first and writes a cited answer, while ChatGPT is OpenAI's own assistant.
Is Perplexity free?
+Yes. The free plan covers everyday searches plus about 5 Pro searches a day, per third-party trackers. Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year, and verified students can get Education Pro for $10 a month.
Is ChatGPT free?
+Yes. The free plan uses GPT-6 Luna with limits and shows ads in the US. Go costs $8 a month with higher limits and ads, Plus costs $20 a month without ads, and Pro starts at $100 a month.
Which is better for students, Perplexity or ChatGPT?
+For research papers and citations, Perplexity, and its Education Pro plan is $10 a month for verified students. For drafting, studying with practice questions and explaining hard topics step by step, ChatGPT. Many students use Perplexity to find sources and ChatGPT to study them.
Can I use Perplexity and ChatGPT together?
+Yes, and it's a good setup: search and verify facts in Perplexity, then paste the results into ChatGPT to write, plan or decide. Both free plans cover light use, so you only need to pay for the one you use for real work.
