Runway ML isn't one video model anymore. For $15 a month it bundles its own Gen-4.5 with Kling 3.0, Seedance and Nano Banana Pro, plus Aleph 2.0 for editing footage you already shot. I priced every plan on October 17 and did the credit math to answer one question: what does a Runway subscription buy you in usable clips?
Short answer
Worth it if you make short video every week and want generation and editing in one app. The catch is credits: Standard's 625 credits buy 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 a month, about three usable clips once you count retries. Most creators should start on Pro ($35, or $28 a month yearly). Learn the app on the free plan first.

🔍 How I reviewed Runway ML
I use Runway on the free plan, so the free-plan notes are first-hand. I haven't paid for Standard, Pro or Max: those sections come from Runway's pricing page, changelog and help center as I read them on October 17, plus launch coverage of Gen-4.5. Every credit figure uses Runway's own published prices, and the calculator shows its working.

Is Runway ML worth it? My 8/10 verdict
| Category | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Model choice | 9/10 | Gen-4.5 plus Kling 3.0, Seedance, Nano Banana Pro and Wan in one account |
| Editing tools | 9/10 | Aleph 2.0 edits real footage; plugins for Adobe and DaVinci Resolve |
| Output quality | 8/10 | Gen-4.5 ranked first on Artificial Analysis at launch |
| Ease of use | 7/10 | Agent plans and assembles shots; credit rules take learning |
| Value | 6/10 | Standard's 625 credits run out in one evening of video |
| Free plan | 4/10 | 125 one-time credits, watermark, limited models |
✅ Choose Runway ML if
you edit as much as you generate, switch between models by shot type, or work inside Premiere Pro, After Effects or DaVinci Resolve.
⛔ Skip it if
you only ever use one model, need dozens of clips a week on a tight budget, or want a free plan that refills.
What is Runway ML now?
🎬 Gen-4.5
Runway's flagship text- and image-to-video model; native audio and multi-shot were added after launch.
✂️ Aleph 2.0
Edits and restyles footage you already have from a text prompt: weather, background, objects.
🤖 Agent
Describe the video in plain words; Agent plans the shots, generates them and assembles the cut.
🧩 Other labs' models
Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.5, Nano Banana Pro and Wan run on the same credits as Gen-4.5.
🔌 Plugins and MCP
A panel for Premiere Pro and After Effects, a DaVinci Resolve plugin, and Runway MCP on Pro and Max.

That bundle is what most Runway ML reviews still miss. Runway used to be a single-model tool; now it works like a studio that rents you the strongest models of the month. So the useful question isn't whether Gen-4.5 beats Kling, but whether one Runway bill replaces two or three separate subscriptions. Higgsfield works the same way, minus the in-house model.
Is Runway ML free? What the free plan gets you
| What you make | Credits each | On 125 free credits |
|---|---|---|
| Gen-4.5 clip, 5 seconds | 60 | 2 |
| Gen-4 Image, 1080p | 8 | 15 |
| Gen-4 Image Turbo | 2 | 62 |
| Text to speech | 1 per 50 characters | 6,250 characters |

📸 My free account
This is my own Runway free plan. The balance is the whole free experience: it doesn't refill, so every test generation comes out of the same small pot.
I use the free plan to learn the editor and test prompts before spending paid credits. Runway lists "all AI video and image models" only from Standard up; free accounts get a selection. So judge Runway's video quality on a paid month, not on two free clips.
One more limit: Runway's terms of use say the free plan is meant for evaluation, not ongoing business use. Client work belongs on a paid plan, which also removes the watermark.
Runway ML pricing: every plan compared
✔ Prices checked on runway.com · October 17
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly (per month) | Credits / month | Gen-4.5 seconds | Key extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | – | 125, once | ~10 | Selection of models, watermark, 5GB |
| Standard | $15 | $12 | 625 | 52 | All models, no watermark, 4K upscaling, 3 projects, 20GB |
| Pro | $35 | $28 | 2,250 | 187 | Top-ups anytime, Brand Kit, voice clone, Runway MCP, unlimited 4K upscaling, 100GB |
| Max | $95 | $76 | 9,500 | 791 | 1-month credit rollover, early model access, HDR and ProRes exports, 500GB |

Three details the plan cards don't shout. Standard and Pro credits reset on each billing date and never roll over. Max carries up to one month of unused credits forward. And extra credits you buy, with a 1,000-credit minimum, never expire.
Pro is where Runway gets fair: 3.6 times Standard's credits for 2.3 times the price. Prices are in US dollars before tax; in the EU and UK, expect VAT at checkout and possibly local-currency pricing. Check Runway's pricing page before you buy, because model credit costs change as new models land.
Runway ML Pro · 2,250 credits a month, every model, unlimited 4K upscaling.

| Model (Runway's price) | Standard · 625 | Pro · 2,250 | Max · 9,500 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gen-4.5 · 60 per 5s | 10 | 37 | 158 |
| Aleph 2.0 · 140 per 5s | 4 | 16 | 67 |
| Seedance 2.0 Pro 1080p · 160 per 4s | 3 | 14 | 59 |
| Seedance 2.0 Fast · 116 per 4s | 5 | 19 | 81 |

| Nano Banana Pro 2K · 20 each | 31 | 112 | 475 |
Generations per month, rounded down, from Runway's own credit prices. Now the number that matters: what one usable 5-second Gen-4.5 clip costs if it takes three tries.
| Plan | Usable clips / month | Per clip (monthly) | Per clip (yearly) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | ~3 | $4.32 | $3.46 |
| Pro | ~12 | $2.80 | $2.24 |
| Max | ~52 | $1.80 | $1.44 |
Compare that cost per usable clip with other tools, not the sticker price. It's also why I'd skip Standard if you plan to make video every week: the cheapest plan has the most expensive clips.
Runway ML credit calculator: what will your clips cost?
Try your own numbers: 10 usable 5-second Gen-4.5 clips at three tries each is 1,800 credits, which Pro covers with room to spare. Drop to one try per clip and Standard covers the same 10 clips. Fewer retries saves more money than a cheaper plan.
How good is Runway Gen-4.5?
Runway's Gen-4.5 research page focuses on motion quality, prompt adherence and consistency between frames, and in practice those are what you pay for: hair, fabric and liquids hold together better than on older Runway models. It remains Runway's flagship, and newer models from other labs now sit beside it in the same app.
Runway's own channel shows the workflow better than any screenshot: one starting image, storyboarded with Nano Banana Pro, then animated with Gen-4.5 image-to-video into a short campaign film.

Rankings change every month, so I wouldn't buy Runway for Gen-4.5 alone. When Kling 3.0 or Seedance handles a shot type better, you switch the model dropdown instead of your subscription. For prompt setups, my Runway ML workflows guide has five step-by-step formats.
Aleph 2.0 and editing: where Runway ML beats Kling

🎞 Premiere Pro and After Effects
A Runway panel brings Aleph into Adobe's apps, so you edit without exporting.
🎚 DaVinci Resolve plugin
In-editor access to Runway tools for paid-plan users.
🔍 4K upscaling
On Standard; unlimited on Pro and Max.
🌅 Ruby
Converts standard-range video to HDR, including Gen-4.5 output and other models' clips.
This editing layer is the real moat. Kling, Sora and Veo make strong clips, but Runway is the one built to sit inside an existing edit. If you mostly cut real footage, my guide to editing videos faster with AI tools covers the rest of the stack.
Runway ML vs Kling, Higgsfield and Sora: which should you pay for?
| Runway ML | Kling direct | Higgsfield | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Own flagship model | Gen-4.5 | Kling 3.0 | None; hosts other labs |
| Other labs' models | Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.5, Nano Banana Pro, Wan | Kling only | Kling 3.0, Seedance, Wan, Nano Banana |
| Edit real footage | Aleph 2.0, plus Adobe and DaVinci plugins | Short-clip edits | Not the focus |
| Cheapest paid plan | $15 ($12 yearly) | Lower than Runway | $19 |
| Free plan | 125 credits, once | Daily free credits | 10 credits on my account |
| Best for | Editors and creators mixing models | Kling-only creators on a budget | Ads and social with camera presets |

Can you use Runway ML videos commercially?
✅ You own your outputs
Runway's help center says you keep ownership and needn't credit Runway.
⚠️ Free plan is for testing
Use a paid plan for continuous commercial work and watermark-free files.
⚠️ Training on content
Third-party summaries of the terms say inputs and outputs may help improve models outside Enterprise; read the terms before uploading client assets.
⚠️ Real people
Don't upload someone's face or voice without consent, especially for voice clones.
Download Runway only from runway.com or the official iOS and Android apps. Popular AI video tools attract fake apps and look-alike sites, as my guide to AI tool scams explains.
Which Runway ML plan should you buy?
Free · $0
125 one-time credits. Learn Agent and the editor; don't judge quality on two clips.
Standard · $15 ($12 yearly)
~3 usable Gen-4.5 clips a month. Fine for images and occasional video.
Pro · $35 ($28 yearly)
My pick. ~12 usable clips, every model, top-ups, unlimited 4K upscaling.
Max · $95 ($76 yearly)
~52 usable clips, 1-month rollover, HDR and ProRes for client delivery.
My verdict: is Runway ML worth paying for?
Runway ML earns its 8/10 as the best all-in-one AI video studio for people who edit, not only generate. Gen-4.5 is strong, but the bigger reasons to pay are Aleph 2.0, the Adobe and DaVinci plugins, and having Kling and Seedance on the same credits.
Go in with the credit math, not the plan names. Standard is a test drive, Pro is the working plan, and fewer retries saves more than any discount. If Kling is all you need, go direct; if you want one app for the whole edit, Runway Pro is where I'd start.
My pick: Runway ML Pro

Runway ML: FAQ
Is Runway ML free?
+Yes, but only as a trial. The free plan gives 125 credits once, a selection of models, 5GB of storage and watermarked downloads. That's about two 5-second Gen-4.5 clips. Credits don't refill, and the terms say free accounts are for evaluation rather than ongoing business use.
How much does Runway ML cost?
+Standard is $15 a month for 625 credits, Pro $35 for 2,250 and Max $95 for 9,500. Yearly billing brings them to $12, $28 and $76 a month. Team and Enterprise plans are priced separately, and prices exclude tax.
How many videos can I make with Runway Standard?
+Standard's 625 credits cover about 10 five-second Gen-4.5 generations a month, or 52 seconds in total. If a usable clip takes three tries, that's about three keepers a month. Images go further: about 78 Gen-4 images at 1080p.
Is Runway ML good for beginners?
+Yes, with a budget warning. Agent lets you describe a video in plain words and assembles the shots for you, so you don't need editing skills. The hard part is credits: beginners retry more, so start on the free plan and move to Pro rather than Standard.
Can I use Runway ML videos commercially?
+Yes. Runway says you keep ownership of what you generate, with no non-commercial restrictions and no credit required. Use a paid plan for client work: free exports are watermarked, and the free plan is meant for evaluation.
Is Runway better than Kling?
+It depends on the job. Kling 3.0 runs inside Runway, so the choice is the platform. Kling direct is cheaper if Kling is the only model you use. Runway is better if you also want Gen-4.5, Seedance and Aleph 2.0 editing in one subscription.
Do Runway credits roll over?
+Only on Max. Standard and Pro credits reset on your billing date each month. Max carries up to one month of unused credits forward. Credits you buy separately, with a 1,000-credit minimum, never expire on any paid plan.
