Which AI Subscription Is Worth It? 7 Plans by Real Cost

Picking an AI subscription looks like comparing four $20 plans, so most guides line up ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro and Perplexity Pro and call it a tie. The sticker prices do match. What you pay for the AI part doesn't.

Google AI Pro carries 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite. Microsoft 365 Premium carries Office for six people. Claude Max carries API credits. Subtract what a bundle replaces, and the real price of an AI subscription runs from about $1 to $20 a month for the same tier of AI.

Short answer

Pay for one AI subscription, not three. Pick ChatGPT Plus ($20) for range, Claude Pro ($20, or $17 a month yearly) for writing and code, or Google AI Pro ($19.99) if you live in Gmail and Docs or already pay for Google storage. Pick Perplexity Pro for research. If you use AI a few times a week, a free plan is enough.

⚡ Quick verdict

Best all-rounder

ChatGPT Plus · $20

🔍 How I researched this AI subscription guide

I checked each plan on the vendor's own page on October 18: Claude, ChatGPT, Google One and Microsoft 365. Where a page doesn't print the price (Perplexity, Grok, YouTube Premium Lite), I used two or more price trackers and say so.

I pay for Claude myself, I paid for ChatGPT Plus in the past, and I run my side-by-side tests on the free ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity plans. I haven't paid for Google AI Pro, Perplexity Pro, Microsoft 365 Premium or SuperGrok, so those parts are research, not hands-on. The net-cost math is my own.

Some links are affiliate links: if you buy through them I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. ChatGPT, Claude, Google and Microsoft links aren't affiliate links. Details

Every AI subscription worth paying for, side by side

Short answer: Five plans sit at about $20 a month: ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, Perplexity Pro and Microsoft 365 Premium. Below them are Google AI Plus at $4.99 and ChatGPT Go at $8. Above them, SuperGrok costs $30. The differences that matter are yearly discounts, what else the plan includes, and who you can share it with.

Prices are US list prices before tax. In the EU and UK every vendor charges in local currency, usually a bit more: Microsoft 365 Premium, for example, lists at €22 a month in Europe. Perplexity and SuperGrok prices come from price trackers that agree with each other; Perplexity's own page doesn't render prices without signing in.

💡 At $20, the AI models are close enough that the extras decide the deal. Compare what each AI subscription bundles, not only what the chatbot can do.

What does an AI subscription really cost after the bundle?

Short answer: Subtract what the plan replaces. If you already pay $9.99 for 2 TB of Google storage, Google AI Pro adds about $10 a month of AI. If you're on Microsoft 365 Family at $12.99, Premium adds $7. A plan with nothing to replace, like ChatGPT Plus, costs its full $20.

This is the calculation the comparison guides I read skip. A bundle only saves money if you'd pay for the other parts anyway, so start from what's already on your card statement:

If you already…PlanStickerPay anywayNet AI cost
pay for Google One 2 TBGoogle AI Pro$19.99$9.99$10.00
pay for 2 TB and want YouTube Premium LiteGoogle AI Pro$19.99$9.99 + $7.99–$8.99about $1–2

have nothing to replaceChatGPT Plus · Claude Pro · Perplexity Pro$20 · $17 · $16.67 (yearly)–full price

A few notes on those numbers. Google sells 2 TB of storage at $9.99 and now labels that tier as part of AI Plus; AI Pro's own page lists YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium Standard, which Google values at $10 a month. Trackers put Premium Lite at $7.99 or $8.99, and I couldn't confirm the current US price on YouTube's page, so I show the range.

Claude Max's API credits are on Anthropic’s pricing page: $100 or $200 a month to build on the Claude Platform. For a developer who'd buy API credits anyway, that makes Max close to free. For everyone else the credits are a bonus you may never use.

One more thing people miss: Microsoft 365 Personal ($9.99) and Family ($12.99) already include Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, with higher usage than the free tier. If you pay for Office, you may already own the AI subscription you were about to buy.

💡 Already paying for several AI tools? Total them first with my AI subscription cost calculator: it flags overlap before you add another plan.

Is a free plan enough, or do you need an AI subscription?

Short answer: Free is enough if you chat a few times a week. Pay when one of three things happens: you hit the limit mid-task more than once a week, you need the top model for hard reasoning or long documents, or you need a paid-only feature such as deep research, Claude Code or AI inside Gmail and Docs.

⏱️ You hit limits

The free plan stops you mid-draft or mid-analysis more than once a week.

🧠 You need the top model

Free plans run smaller models: GPT-6 Luna on ChatGPT, Sonnet and Haiku on Claude, Flash on Gemini.

🔧 You need a paid feature

Deep research, Claude Code, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, or Copilot agents in Office.

The free tiers are better than their reputation. ChatGPT Free gives unlimited everyday text chats (with ads in the US), Claude Free includes web search and memory, and Perplexity Free answers with citations plus a few Pro searches a day. My list of free AI tools with no login covers the options that don't even need an account.

1. What do you use AI for?

2. What do you already pay for?

US list prices checked October 18. YouTube Premium Lite counted at $7.99, the lower tracker price.

What's the best AI subscription for a family?

Short answer: Google AI Pro, by a wide margin on price. It's the only $20 plan whose AI benefits extend to family members, up to five others, so four people pay about $5 each. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity plans are individual, and Microsoft 365 Premium shares Office but keeps the AI for the subscription owner.
Plan1 person4 people, all with AIPer person
Google AI Plus$4.99$4.99$1.25
Google AI Pro$19.99$19.99$5.00
ChatGPT Plus$20$80$20
Claude Pro$20$80$20
Perplexity Pro$20$80$20
Microsoft 365 Premium$19.99AI for the owner only–

Two caveats from Google's own page. The bundle perks, like YouTube Premium Lite, aren't shared with the family group, and the Gemini app is only for people 18 and over. For teens, a family AI subscription doesn't cover them on Gemini; check each vendor's age rules before buying for a household.

How can you get an AI subscription cheaper or free?

Short answer: Pay yearly where it's offered, and check student and teacher deals first. Claude Pro drops to $17 a month yearly, Perplexity Pro and Microsoft 365 Premium to about $16.67. US college students can get Google AI Pro free for a year, Perplexity Education Pro is $10, and verified US K–12 teachers get ChatGPT for Teachers free.
  • Yearly billing: Claude Pro $200, Perplexity Pro $200, Microsoft 365 Premium $199.99, SuperGrok $300. ChatGPT Plus and Claude Max are monthly only.
  • US college students: Google AI Pro free for 12 months through its student offer. You need a payment method, and it renews at $19.99 unless you cancel.
  • Students elsewhere: a free year of Google AI Plus in supported countries, or Perplexity Education Pro at $10.
  • K–12 teachers: OpenAI lists ChatGPT for Teachers as free for verified US educators.
  • Bundles you already pay: Microsoft 365 Personal and Family include Copilot; check before buying a separate AI subscription.

I'd use a free year as a trial with a deadline: set a reminder a week before it renews and decide then whether you'd pay full price.

When is a $100–$200 AI subscription worth it?

Short answer: Only when the $20 plan stops you several times a week. ChatGPT, Claude and Google now sell the same ladder: about five times the $20 limits for $100 and twenty times for $200. Claude Max adds $100–$200 a month in API credits, which makes it the best value for developers who'd pay for the API anyway.
VendorAbout $100About $200What's extra
ChatGPT ProFrom $100, three usage tiersHigher tiersPro reasoning with GPT-6 Astra, the Dots agent
Claude Max$100 (5x Pro)$200 (20x Pro)$100 or $200 in monthly API credits, priority access
Google AI Ultra$99.99 (5x Pro)$199.99 (20x Pro)20 or 30 TB storage, YouTube Premium
Perplexity Max–$200Highest limits, early features

Upgrade one tier, for one month, when limits cost you real work, then check whether you used the headroom. If you're buying the top tier for coding, compare it with the tools in my GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code vs Cursor test first.

Should you pay for two AI subscriptions?

Short answer: Usually not. The $20 assistants overlap on writing, research and everyday questions. Pay for the one you open first each day and use the free plan of a second for what it does better, like Perplexity Free for sourced search. Two paid plans at $20 cost $480 a year.

The one pairing I'd pay for is a chat assistant plus a plan that's mostly something else you'd buy anyway, like Google storage or Microsoft Office. Then the second AI subscription is close to free, and you get two different strengths instead of two copies of the same one.

When should you cancel or downgrade your AI subscription?

1️⃣ No limit in a month

You never hit the free cap's equivalent: drop to the budget tier or Free.

2️⃣ Less than weekly

You open it a few times a month: cancel and use the free plan.

3️⃣ Duplicated by a bundle

Copilot or Gemini already sits in a plan you pay for: cancel the standalone one.

Cancelling is low-risk with all five main vendors: your plan stays active to the end of the period, and your chats stay in your account. Claude asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge.

My verdict: one AI subscription, chosen by what you already pay

The sticker prices tie at $20; the real costs don't. Once you subtract the storage, Office apps or API credits you'd buy anyway, the same tier of AI costs anywhere from about a dollar to the full $20.

Choose Google AI Pro if you already pay for Google storage or share with family. Choose Microsoft 365 Premium if your day is Word and Excel. Choose Claude Pro for writing and code, Perplexity Pro for sourced research, and ChatGPT Plus if you want one app that does a bit of everything. Then pay for one, and review it in three months.

AI subscription FAQ

Which AI subscription is best?

+

For most people, ChatGPT Plus at $20 covers the widest range of jobs. Claude Pro is stronger for writing and code, Google AI Pro is the best value if you use Gmail or share with family, and Perplexity Pro is best for research. Pay for one, not several.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month?

+

It is if you use ChatGPT most days and hit the free plan's limits or need its reasoning models, deep research and projects. If you use it a few times a week, the free plan or ChatGPT Go at $8 is enough. Plus has no yearly discount for individuals.

Is Claude Pro better than ChatGPT Plus?

+

For long writing, editing documents and coding, I find Claude stronger, and Pro includes Claude Code. ChatGPT Plus has more creative extras like image creation and voice. Both cost $20 a month, but Claude Pro drops to $17 a month if you pay yearly.

Is Google AI Pro worth it?

+

It's the best deal of the $20 plans if you'd pay for Google storage anyway, because it includes 5 TB, YouTube Premium Lite and family sharing of the AI benefits. If you already pay $9.99 for 2 TB, the AI part costs about $10 a month.

Can I share an AI subscription with my family?

+

Only with Google. Family members on a Google AI Pro plan get its AI benefits, so up to six people share $19.99. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity plans are for one person, and Microsoft 365 Premium shares Office with six people but keeps Copilot's extra AI for the owner.

Is there a free AI subscription for students?

+

Eligible US college students can get Google AI Pro free for a year, and students in other supported countries can get Google AI Plus free. Perplexity Education Pro costs $10 a month for verified students. Set a reminder before any free year renews.

Which AI subscription is cheapest?

+

Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month is the cheapest paid plan from a major vendor, followed by ChatGPT Go at $8, which may show ads. Both run smaller models than the $20 plans, so they suit light daily use.

Do I need more than one AI subscription?

+

Usually not. The $20 assistants overlap heavily, so pay for the one you use most and keep a second on its free plan. A second paid plan makes sense when it's mostly a bundle you'd buy anyway, like Google storage or Microsoft Office.
